Exhibition 'Archive of Summer' by Trix Berendsen

Exhibition 'Archive of Summer' by Trix Berendsen

From August 27 through November 3, 2024, the work of artist Trix Berendsen will be on display in the lunchroom of Museum Het Schip.

Within the art practice of Trix Berendsen (1997), nature plays an indispensable role. Her love of gardening creates an interconnectedness in her work that is reflected in the historical concept of a garden: the creation of an archive of summer. In this current series, she attempts to capture the bloom in the garden villages in the early years of the Spaarndammer neighborhood. Various plants and flowers are highlighted.

The regular column "The practical gardener" from the monthly magazine of Eigen Haard (1924-1925) gave her a lot of insight into which garden plants and flowers were advised to sow in the gardens, which then also became common as birds scattered them.

With the use of a gel plate, she creates monotypes to create a layering that allows her to depict the plants one-on-one. By isolating, contextualizing and naming the plants, they can be viewed as they are. It allows the viewer to gain an understanding and interest in nature, their garden, and their way of looking at the world.

Thanks to archivist Harry Smit for sifting through the monthly journals. In addition, many thanks to gardener and archivist Ton van Bedaf who supported Trix with information and knowledge!
