Exhibition 'Indonesia and the Amsterdam School' in Museum Het Schip
From December 1, 2022 to August 27, 2023, Museum Het Schip presents an exhibition on the connection of the Amsterdam School with Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies. Through film and photographic material, drawings, prints and applied art, the exhibition shows how the Dutch architectural movement was influenced by the forms, colors and materials from the former colony.
Indonesian forms, colors and materials deeply impressed the innovators of Art Nouveau and the Amsterdam School. They studied the temple complexes, folk architecture and crafts with great interest and appreciation. Some traveled to the Dutch East Indies, but most gained impressions at international world exhibitions. For example, in 1910 in Brussels, where Indonesian crafts such as batik and braiding were shown.
In the exhibition Indonesia and the Amsterdam School, you get to see the Indonesian influence on buildings, sculptures and applied art of the Amsterdam School. A great example are the undulating roofs of Minangkabau houses from Sumatra, one of Indonesia's islands. These can be found as pictorial rhyme in the houses of the Amsterdam School from around the 1920s. Other Indonesian forms, such as the gunungan and the mythical naga dragon snake, were also incorporated into furniture, masonry dressings and artifacts by the designers of the Amsterdam School.
The exhibition does not only provide a Dutch perspective. Through film clips, Indonesian experts on art and architecture talk about the Indonesian influences on the Amsterdam School.
